Blue's Interview

The perspective of an older generation

What is your role in this family?

I’m a caretaker in my family if you get what I mean. Most of the time I’m the one everyone comes to when something goes wrong or they need something. So, I think the title caretaker fits.

What is your connection like with the other people in your family?

It's good. We have our ups and downs, but what family doesn’t?

What is your definition of kinship? Would you describe your family as kin?

Well, doesn’t kin just mean family? The people you look after who look after you in return. Yes, my family is my kin.

What do you typically do when your family meets?

Catch up, fire up the grill, maybe crack open a beer or two. It depends on the occasion, but we usually at least have dinner here at my place.

Do you speak more than one language? For the languages you do speak are you fluent?

Yup, I speak Spanish and I am fluent in both Spanish and English.

Do members of your family speak a different language you aren’t fluent in?

Not that I know of. I’m pretty sure Spanish and English are the only languages we’re fluent in.

Could you describe one of the most challenging communication experiences (related to language) within your family and explain how you dealt with it?

Growing up, trying to get my parents to understand more English was challenging. Not in a way worth writing home about, but it was challenging at times to combine both of the worlds I was living in. I was taught both English and Spanish as a kid. I grew up in a Spanish-speaking house and went to an English-speaking school so naturally, I was able to pick up both. My parents immigrated from Mexico before I was born and knew some basic English, just enough to get by. So my siblings and I assisted my parents with communicating at times.
